If you’re an Indian student planning a Master’s in Germany, there’s a new requirement known as Germany APS dmat exam you need to know about and if you’re applying for Summer Semester 2027 or later, it directly affects you.
On 29 June 2026, APS India officially announced the Digital Master Test (dMAT) as a mandatory addition to the APS documentation process for selected Master’s applicants. Registration opened the same day. The first exam in India is scheduled for 26 September 2026. The first certificates will be available from 12 October 2026.
This is not a rumour or a draft policy. It is live.
This guide explains exactly what the dMAT is, who needs it, who doesn’t, how the exam works, what it costs, and what the timeline looks like all verified against the official APS India and g.a.s.t. sources published this week. For more information on how to apply for APS you can refer our guide here https://pinakin.education/germany-aps-certificate-complete-guide-2026/
What Is Germany APS dMAT Exam?
The dMAT is short for Digital Master Test is a standardized academic aptitude test. It was developed by German universities in collaboration with g.a.s.t. (the body that also runs TestDaF and TestAS), and is supported by the DAAD.
It is administered at physical test centres, conducted entirely in English, and takes approximately 3.5 hours including a break between modules.
Three things the dMAT is not:
- It is not a language test (it does not replace IELTS or TestDaF)
- It is not a replacement for the APS Certificate
- It is not a pass/fail gate — you cannot “fail” in the sense that your APS documents are rejected
What it is: an additional document that must be submitted with your APS application if you fall within the affected subject groups. Your dMAT result will be referenced on your APS Certificate, and German universities will decide individually how much weight to give the score in their admissions process.
Does the Germany APS dMAT exam Replace the APS Certificate?
No and this is the most important clarification to get right before anything else.
The APS Certificate remains compulsory for all Indian students applying to German universities. The dMAT sits inside the APS process as an additional document. Both are required if you are in an affected discipline.
Here is how the overall Germany application journey now looks for affected students:
University Selection → APS Registration → dMAT (if applicable) → APS Certificate Issued → German Student Visa → Enrolment
The dMAT certificate must be submitted together with your APS application documents. If you have registered for APS but not yet shipped your documents, you can submit the dMAT certificate separately once it becomes available — your other APS documents do not need to wait.

Who Needs to take Germany APS dMAT?
In its introductory phase in 2026, the dMAT requirement applies exclusively to applicants whose undergraduate degree is in one of the affected fields. Based on official APS India guidance, these currently are:
- Engineering (including Computer Science and IT)
- Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics
- Business / Management
If your Bachelor’s degree falls within one of these areas and you are applying for Summer Semester 2027 or any intake after that, the dMAT is part of your APS documentation.
| Applicant | dMAT Required? |
|---|---|
| Engineering Graduate | ✅ Yes |
| Commerce / Finance / Economics Graduate | ✅ Yes |
| Business / Management Graduate | ✅ Yes |
| Bachelor’s Applicant | ❌ No |
| PhD Applicant | ❌ No |
| Exchange / Double-Degree Programme | ❌ No |
| Winter Semester 2026/27 Applicant | ❌ No |
| APS documents shipped before 29 June 2026 | ❌ Exempt |
What about mixed or interdisciplinary degrees?
This is where students need to be careful. Computer Science, BCA, standalone Information Technology, Data Science, AI/ML, Cyber Security, B.Sc. Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Architecture, and Agriculture (unless Agricultural Engineering) are not automatically covered even if the degree title contains words like “Technology” or “Management.” The official wording on your degree certificate and transcript is decisive, not the program’s marketing name.
If your degree combines disciplines Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Financial Technology, Industrial Engineering the final classification will be based on the official list of affected study fields published by APS India. Check that list directly before assuming you are or are not affected.
Who Is Exempt from the Germany APS dMAT exam?
Applicants who shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026 are exempt from the dMAT requirement for that APS procedure. This applies even if the APS verification is still ongoing and no APS certificate has been issued yet.
Applicants who have already completed the APS procedure and have received their APS certificate are not required to take the Germany APS dMAT exam for that completed APS procedure.
Additionally exempt:
- Bachelor’s and PhD applicants
- Students on officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programmes (confirmation from your home institution must be submitted with APS documents)
- Applicants whose previous degree is outside the three affected fields
- Anyone applying for Winter Semester 2026/27 the first dMAT certificates will only be available from 12 October 2026, after most Winter 2026/27 application deadlines have already passed
How Is the dMAT Structured?
The dMAT consists of two modules: a core module and a subject module. The core module measures general study aptitude and consists of three subtests testing general cognitive skills. The subject modules measure subject-specific aptitude for this purpose, the subject knowledge acquired during previous studies and the ability to apply this knowledge are tested.
For the APS process in India, applicants take the General Academic Module as their subject module.
The tasks consist of a combination of a typical problem and related questions. The dMAT therefore requires specialised knowledge and application skills, but not purely memorised factual knowledge.
All tasks are in single-choice format. The test language is English throughout.
How is it scored?
The certificate shows your results on two scales: the percentile rank and the dMAT score. The percentile rank indicates what percentage of the other participants received a lower or equally good result. For example, a percentile rank of 70 means 70% of all participants got a lower score or the same score while 30% achieved a higher score.
The dMAT score is a conversion of the total number of correct answers to a value between 0 and 200. The mean (average) is 100.
Crucially a lower score does not automatically cause an APS refusal. Universities decide individually how to use the dMAT results. That said, high scores do matter: RWTH Aachen’s Master’s in Battery Science and Technology bases 80% of its admission decision on the dMAT, leaving only 20% for the bachelor’s CGPA. This will vary by programme and university.
The dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely. You sit it once.

Exam Dates, Fee and Test Centres
APS India officially announced the introduction of the dMAT on 29 June 2026. The first dMAT examination in India will be conducted on 26 September 2026, while registration has already started through the official dMAT portal.
For the first test cycle, the dMAT Result certificate will be available online on 12 October 2026.
| Key Date | Detail |
|---|---|
| Registration Opens | 29 June 2026 |
| First Exam in India | 26 September 2026 |
| Certificates Available | 12 October 2026 |
| Applies From | Summer Semester 2027 |
Fee: The dMAT fee is €150, paid to g.a.s.t. when you register. That sits on top of the usual APS fee.
Test Centres in India: Test centres in India (introductory phase) include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. Popular centres fill quickly, so register early.
Registration is managed by g.a.s.t., not APS India. You register at the official dMAT portal (d-mat.de), not through the APS portal.
How to Register for the dMAT
- Visit the official dMAT registration portal at d-mat.de/en
- Create a new account using a valid email address
- Fill in your personal and academic details accurately
- Select your preferred test centre from the available locations
- Pay the €150 registration fee online
- Submit and download your registration confirmation
Since seats at test centres are limited, candidates are advised to complete registration as early as possible.
After the exam, download your certificate from the g.a.s.t. participant portal using the login credentials you created during registration. Submit it together with your APS application documents.
Does the Germany APS dMAT exam Affect Your Visa?
Indirectly, yes. The APS Certificate is a prerequisite for the German Student Visa. Since the Germany dMAT APS certificate must be submitted as part of your APS documentation (for affected students), not having it means your APS process cannot be completed which means the visa process cannot begin.
The dMAT itself is not submitted to the German embassy. But it sits in the chain that leads there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the dMAT required for Winter Semester 2026/27?
No. The first results are only available in October 2026, after most winter intake deadlines. The dMAT applies from Summer Semester 2027 onwards.
Does the dMAT replace TestAS?
No. TestAS is a separate aptitude test. The dMAT is a new requirement within the APS process and does not replace TestAS, anabin, or any formal university eligibility check.
What if my APS application was already in progress on 29 June 2026?
If you shipped your complete APS documents before 29 June 2026, you are exempt from the dMAT for that application even if your APS verification is still ongoing.
Is a low dMAT score a rejection?
Not automatically. The certificate must be submitted for your APS to be complete — but each university decides independently what weight to give the score. Some programmes will use it heavily; others may treat it as one factor among many.
How long is the dMAT certificate valid?
Indefinitely. You take it once and the certificate does not expire.
Is the dMAT only for Indian students?
For now, yes. The Germany APS dMAT requirement is part of the APS process in India and applies to Indian graduates. As of 2026 it has not been introduced for applicants from other countries such as China or Vietnam.
